What is underlayment?
A thin material installed between the subfloor and finished flooring that provides cushioning, sound absorption, and moisture protection depending on the flooring type.
Underlayment sits between your subfloor and the flooring material on top, functioning as a protective barrier and comfort layer. Most flooring installations in Tampa homes use some form of underlayment to address humidity, temperature swings, and impact noise that come with Florida's climate and construction.
The role of underlayment varies by flooring type. Laminate and vinyl plank flooring require underlayment to cushion the floor, reduce walking noise, and provide a vapor barrier against moisture rising from the concrete slab or wood subfloor below.
