What is an uncoupling membrane?

An uncoupling membrane is a flexible polyethylene or polymer sheet installed between the subfloor and tile to absorb movement and prevent tile cracking caused by substrate shifting.

An uncoupling membrane is a thin, flexible layer installed beneath tile to separate it from the subfloor. Products like Ditra use a polyethylene or polymer composition with a grid pattern that allows slight movement in the substrate without transferring stress directly to the tile and grout above.
