What is a subfloor?
A subfloor is the structural layer installed directly over floor joists or concrete that supports and provides a stable base for finish flooring materials.
The subfloor is the intermediate structural layer that sits between the floor joists (in wood-frame construction) or the foundation slab and the finished flooring surface you walk on. In Tampa homes, this layer carries the weight of people, furniture, and fixtures, then transfers that load down to the supporting beams and foundation.
Three primary subfloor types appear in the Tampa area. Plywood subfloors, typically 3/4-inch thick, remain common in older and mid-range residential construction due to their strength and affordability. Oriented Strand Board (OSB) serves a similar purpose at a lower cost but is more susceptible to moisture damage, which matters in Florida's humid climate. Concrete slabs sit directly on the ground as both foundation and subfloor in many single-story Tampa homes and serve as a stable base for tile, vinyl, and epoxy coatings.
The subfloor's condition directly affects the durability and performance of any finish flooring installed above it. Moisture damage, rot, or structural failure in the subfloor will eventually show up as squeaking, bouncing, or failure of the finish floor itself. In Tampa's warm, humid environment, proper ventilation beneath wood subfloors and moisture barriers under concrete slabs prevent rot and mold growth. Flooring contractors assess subfloor integrity during inspections because compromised subfloors require repair or replacement before new flooring can be safely installed.
