What is solid hardwood flooring?

Solid hardwood flooring is made from full-thickness wood planks milled from a single hardwood species. Common species used in residential and commercial applications include red oak, white oak, maple, and hickory. Each plank runs the entire thickness of the finished floor, typically ranging from 3/4 inch to 5/16 inch thick, depending on grade and intended use.

The wood arrives at job sites in various widths and lengths, graded by appearance and defect standards. Planks are laid over a suitable subfloor, typically fastened with nails or staples, and then sanded and finished on site or pre-finished at the mill.

In Tampa's humid climate, solid hardwood flooring requires careful attention to moisture dynamics. The high humidity and temperature swings between air-conditioned interior spaces and outdoor conditions cause wood to expand and contract seasonally. This wood movement can lead to gaps between planks in dry periods or cupping and crowning if moisture absorption is uneven. Contractors in the area must acclimate wood to site conditions before installation and ensure proper subfloor vapor barriers and drainage to manage moisture. Regular monitoring of relative humidity levels in the home helps minimize movement and maintains the floor's integrity over time.
