What is luxury vinyl plank (LVP)?

Luxury vinyl plank is a synthetic flooring product built from multiple layers stacked to create a durable, waterproof floor. The core layer typically consists of limestone, polyurethane, or fiberglass-reinforced vinyl that gives LVP its structural rigidity. Above this sits a vinyl layer carrying the printed design, which can replicate wood grain, stone, or tile patterns with photographic accuracy. A protective wear layer on top resists scratches, stains, and foot traffic.

LVP differs from sheet vinyl in both format and performance. Sheet vinyl comes in continuous rolls and is glued or stapled down across an entire room, whereas LVP installs as individual planks that lock together through click-systems or glue-down methods. This plank format makes LVP easier for contractors to handle and allows for simpler repairs since individual pieces can be replaced without disturbing the whole floor.

LVP also differs from laminate flooring. While both are designed to look like wood or stone, laminate uses a high-density fiberboard core that is not waterproof. LVP's vinyl construction makes it genuinely water-resistant, which is why it performs better in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements in Tampa's humid climate. Laminate is less forgiving around moisture and requires careful sealing at seams.

The appeal of LVP for contractors and homeowners lies in its balance of realistic aesthetics, water resistance, and reasonable installation speed compared to genuine hardwood or stone.
